| We spoke with the City of Birmingham Chief Building Inspector, Ron Webb, to get local tips for residents looking to do a home renovation, remodel, or new construction project. Ron says it is important to go through the process of a permit check with the zoning department to determine if you can build a new home on the lot that you have purchased or add to your current home. Also, you will need to find out which code you fall under, as some areas are under 2002 codes, some are under 2003 codes and others are under the new 2006 codes. Even if you are familiar with these codes, having done work in the past, it is important to check local amendments as changes are being made regularly. One important piece of information which Ron says that all potential do-it-yourselfers need to know is that, in the state of Alabama, it is a requirement that a licensed builder/contractor do the work if the project cost exceeds $10,000 |
